Descendant - Suffolk Dark Ale, Batch #002 from 2011 (7% abv)
Mystic Brewery (Chelsea, MA)
I visited the Mystic taproom last week and they had the very interesting option to do a vertical tasting. On draft was the most recent batch of Descendant and in addition they were offering pours of their 2011 bottle aged Descendant (which I liked so much I decided to buy a bottle so I could post a review).
This ale pours dark brown, almost black with a one finger beige head. The nose is very interesting. It smells of molasses, over ripe banana peels, and faint spice with a touch of booze. The taste starts similar to a Munich Dark Lager with smooth flavors of toasted dark bread with a slightly sweetness. Then flavors change in the aftertaste with a touch of spice and booze to it, similar to the smell. It has a medium body that is surprisingly effervescent given its age. This beer really struck a chord with me because it married two of my favorite things when drinking beer on a cold day. The smooth bready flavors of a Munich Dark or Brown Ale followed by a touch of spice and booze to warm you up.
