Harpoon Leviathan IPA. American Imperial IPA. Boston, Massachusetts 10% ABV.
I purchased this bottle a little over a month ago at the Pioneer Grocery Store on Columbus and 74th. I had recently read something about the beer, and mistakenly told someone I had tried it before. After reading about it, I realized that I in fact had not tried it, so the ability to buy in an individual bottle at my local store was an appealing idea. Nevertheless, it took me a long time to get around to it, and the only reason I had it when I did is because the bottle says to enjoy by 7/15/14. On to the review!
Served chilled from a 12 oz bottle and poured into a snifter. I was going to have it in a pint glass, as I do with many IPAs, but noticed that this beer is 10% ABV. Definitely did not expect that! As I do with most higher ABV beers, I poured into a snifter in order to better capture the aroma. Pours a copper-amber color that is pretty clear. There is a small one-finger foam head as well. The smell is pretty boozy, hence the 10% ABV. Additionally, there is some fruity-citrusy smell that I cannot distinguish. Carbonation is on the heavier side, with a medium-full body. Taste is bitter, hoppy, boozy, and citrusy. Aftertaste is quite bitter, and it stays on the tongue longer than most Imperial IPAs (IIPAs).
Overall this is a pretty solid beer from Harpoon, and is my second favorite of theirs behind the Citra Victorious special release that came out this spring (I am still holding on to one bottle of that). Being an MA native, I have always tried to buy their offerings as well as other local brews. As my readers know I am obsessed with Wormtown, and enjoy other Massachusetts beers such as Jack's Abby, Ipswich, Clown Shoes, CBC, Pretty Things, and even Sam Adams. As I said in my article yesterday, buy craft, and buy local!
