Lagunitas NightTime Ale. Petaluma, California. American Black Ale. 8.2% ABV.
Served chilled from a 22 oz bomber and poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a pitch lack color with a 1.5 finger tan foam head. Smells are roasty-coffee leads the way with a strange hint of citrus. Medium carbonation with the same body. One would think that an 8% dark beer would have an incredibly heavy feel to it, but this one is surprisingly light feeling. I could easily drink a glass or two of this stuff. Taste has hints of bitter coffee, some citrus, and even a hint of chocolate and almonds. Aftertaste is quite bitter, leaning heavily on coffee and hops.
Overall, this limited release by Lagunitas is a good one. I tend to always buy their new 22 oz releases, and have rarely been disappointed. I love their Cappuccino Stout, and even have a bottle of that aging back in my cellar. Additionally, you can never go wrong with the Lagunitas Sucks, Little Sumpin Sumpin, Maximus, IPA, Pale Ale or Brown Shugga. Just a solid brewery that rarely misses.
Black Ales are typically not a favorite of mine, but this one surprised.
