Kiwi Rising

Jack's Abby Kiwi Rising. Double Imperial Pale Lager. Framingham, MA 8.5% ABV.

Served chilled from a 16.9 oz bottle and poured into a snifter. Pours an orange-golden color with a one finger white tan foam head. The beer is very cloudy and I cannot see through it. Smell is sweet, citrusy and earthy. Carbonation is moderate with a medium body. The taste is unlike any double IPL I have ever had. To be honest, in a blind tasting I could have called this a double IPA. There is a huge rush of the New Zealand hops (this beer is brewed with all New Zealand hops-hence Kiwi) that creates a bitter, yet citrusy bite. It is piney and resinous like a world class DIPA. Aftertaste is bitter and lingering, yet at the same time quite crisp and very refreshing.

If I could make one comparison, this beer is  Heady Topper in IPL form. They are practically the spitting image of each other, and I think I have found a new member of my top 10. I had one of these a few weeks ago back in MA, and made sure to buy one more bottle before returning to NYC. I wish I had bought about 10 more. Check out this article published in the Boston Globe today about Jack's Abby. They are opening a new 67,000 square foot brewery and will be able to more than double their output. Hopefully the quality will remain the same and they will expand to a few more states!
