Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale. Weyerbacher Brewing Company. Easton, PA. Pumpkin ale. 8% ABV.
Pours a reddish/brown-amber color with a two finger light brown head. Smells are sweet and pumpkiny. Hints of brown sugar, nutmeg, caramel and allspice. Carbonation is moderate with a medium body. Taste is like the smell. The pumpkin taste leads the way, but the caramel, nutmeg, allspice and brown sugar/cinnamon is also there. Aftertaste is somewhat spicy.
Overall this is one of the better pumpkin beers that I've had that didn't come in a 22 oz bomber. Immediately after finishing this, I went to the store to pick up one more bottle, just in case I couldn't find it again this season. Highly recommended!

Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale. Elysian Brewing Company. Seattle, Washington. Pumpkin Ale. 5.9% ABV. Troegs Hop Knife Harvest Ale. Troegs Brewing Company, Hershey, PA. America IPA 8.7% ABV. With the NFL kicking off today, it officially appears that fall is here. In honor of Fall, and the release of seasonal beers, I have decided to do a full week of nothing but pumpkin and harvest beers! I figured the time is best now so you can be fully educated when you go to the store and choose six packs of fall pumpkin seasonals.
This week, I will be sampling and reviewing the following (note the order may change): 1. Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale 2. Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale 3. Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout 4. Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream Pumpkin 5. Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale 6. Troegs Hop Knife Harvest Ale 7. Cisco Brewers Pumple Drumkin My readers know that I have already reviewed Southern Tier Pumking as well as Southern Tier Warlock this late summer-early fall season. I hope to try and review as many pumpkin beers as possible before winter comes with the holiday porters and imperial stouts. Should be a fun next few months! GO PATS! Scott Stone Reason Be Damned. Belgian Abbey Ale aged in Red White Barrels. Stone Brewing Company Escondido, CA. 8.2% ABV. Founders Dissenter Imperial Pale Lager (IPL). Grand Rapids, Michigan. 8.7% ABV.
My readers know how much I love the Founders Brewing Company. I was excited to find out that they recently brewed their first lager, and did it in style. They went with an imperial pale lager, also known as an IPL. With every brewery under the sun brewing IPAs, beer fans have been looking for new and adventurous brews. Lagers are brewed differently than ales, and take longer. Jack's Abby is well known for their lagers, and other breweries are following suit. On to the review. Served chilled from a 22 oz bomber and served in a snifter. Pours a moderately clear copper color with a one finger white foam head. Smells are quite floral, with hints of grapefruit, lemon and other tropical fruits. Carbonation is moderate to high with a medium body. Taste is of grapefruit, citrusy hops, sweetness and a cracker-esq malt. Aftertaste is crisp, but with a slight lingering bitterness. This is a solid IPL. I put it slightly behind the Hoponius Union and Mass Rising from Jack's Abby, but ahead of the Ballast Point-Sierra Nevada Collaboration from Beer Camp. 92/100 $10/22 oz bottle Singlecut Billy Full Stack Double IPA. Astoria, Queens, NYC. American Double IPA (DIPA). 8.6% ABV. Southern Tier Warlock, from the Blackwater Series. Imperial Stout Brewed with Pumpkins. Lakewood, NY. 8.6% ABV. I wanted to wait until Halloween to post this one, but was afraid all stores would be out by then. Stock up on this immediately! Westbrook Gose. Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Gose style beer 4.00% ABV. Westbrook Citrus Ninja Exchange 2014. American Double IPA brewed with Fruit and Citrus Peel in collaboration with The Charleston Beer Exchange. Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. 9.5% ABV.
Served chilled from a 22 oz bomber and poured in a snifter. Pours a copper-amber color with a slight red-orange hue and a thin white foam head. Smells are of grapefruit and citrus peel and caramel malts. Carbonation is moderate with a medium body. Taste is fruity. Grapefruit, mango and a syrupy taste begins, with an intense hoppy bitterness at the finish. Overall a pretty solid beer from Westbrook. I had higher expectations after trying the Mexican Cake and IPA, but this was still very good. With a plethora of great DIPAs out there, I would rather spend my money on some lower cost options. However, to split it with a friend is never a bad idea! 89/100 $12/22 oz bomber |
